‘Courage’
If it were not for the courage of Jon and Alex, the couple in Mads Nissen’s winning photo at World
Press Photo in 2015, this brave story about homosexuality in Russia would never have been told.
If it were not for the courage of Burhan Ozbilici, the photographer behind the shooting of the
Russian ambassador Andrey Karlov, he would never have captured this scene of anger.
Great photography takes courage. Not only from the photographer, but also very much from the
people being photographed. The photo story should show both courage from the photographer and
the people involved in the story.

Sigrid Nygaard works as a photo editor and photographer at the national Danish newspaper
‘Dagbladet Information’, based in Copenhagen, Denmark. She graduated as a photojournalist from
The Danish School of Media and Journalism (2008) and was awarded with honorable mentions at
the Danish Picture of the Year in 2016 and 2017. She was also nominated for a Cavling award, the
Danish Pulitzer Prize, in 2016.
Sigrid is a visiting lecturer at The Danish School for Media and Journalism, DIS Copenhagen and
Copenhagen Film and Photography School.
She believes in the importance of consistently fighting for visual storytelling in a changing media
landscape. She strives to commission and produce outstanding documentary photography, often
with an eye to experimental forms and expressions.
Sigrid has been a jury member of Picture of the Year in Denmark (2011), and Picture of the Year in
Sweden (2012). She was a member of the the 6x6 online selection committee at World Press Photo
(2018) and Picture of the Year in Lithuania (2018).

Looking forward to seeing you in Vilnius,
